Baking of skylark buns

The sisters of the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery at bread-baking obedience baked skylark buns today.

Baking these cheerful messengers of spring during Lent is a folk tradition that has to with the commemoration day of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. Larks symbolize the souls of the martyrs rising up to God, and the song of these birds symbolizes a prayer of the Sebastian martyrs to God.

Following tomorrow’s liturgy all the sisters of the monastery will traditionally receive baked larks at the common meal.
