Patronal feast at the Dormition Church

A patronal feast to the Holy Great Martyr and Victory Bearer George was celebrated at the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery. One of the side chapels of the Dormition Church

Is consecrated to this saint. The commemoration of Great Martyr George always falls on Paschal days and it makes this feast even more joyous and bright.

The mosaics and icons of St. George chapel depict not only the scenes from the life of the saint but also the holy warriors: Archangel of God Michael, Saints Alexander Nevsky, Dimitry Donskoy, Demetrios of Thessaloniki, and Feodor Ushakov. That is why it is rightfully called the chapel of military glory.

The late-morning Divine Liturgy was served there followed by the Paschal procession at the Holy Kanavka.

Great Martyr George was a soldier and confessor of the Christian faith. He was vouchsafed to have such a great power of the spirit that not only he vanquished the visible enemy but also an unseen one that appeared to him and the people in the form of a serpent. Remaining steadfast to the Lord, St. George was able to slay the symbol of evil and that’s why he is considered the champion of Christ-loving warriors.

Our country enjoys special protection of the Saint the Victory Bearer. Exactly on his commemoration day, the Great Patriotic War ended in the victory of our people and the final Act of the capitulation of fascist Germany and its armed forces was signed on the night of May 9, 1945.

St. George the Victory Bearer, a horseman slaying the serpent, has become the heraldic sign of Moscow and the emblem of the Russian state.
