The Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

Today the Church remembers the holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The feast in its significance is set apart from the cycle of the church services and is made equal to the twelve major feasts. In order to worthily prepare for the glorification of the Leaders of the Apostles, the Church enters the fasting period before the Apostles’ feast.

The fast known as the “Peter’s fast” of today was known as the apostolic fast during the first centuries. The great spiritual exploits of the apostles are unmatched to anything accomplished afterwards in the Church, neither by its martyrs, confessors of faith nor by pious life of its members. The Apostles, the witnesses to the Savior, received the teaching from Him and their apostolic work spread the word throughout the universe. Preaching their Apostolic message, the apostles came unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8). With their preaching and their own lives, they became a testament to the truth about the Savior.

The Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery celebrated the feast holding three Divine Liturgy services at its cathedrals where a great number of faithful partook of the Holy Gifts. The Panagia prayer service took place at the end of the late-morning liturgy.

St. Sergius skete, located on the outskirts of Arzamas in the village of Vyezdnoye, celebrated the patronal feast day. One of the three altars in its great church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Glorious and All-Praised Leaders of the Apostles.
