Finding of the relics of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh

Today the Church celebrates the finding of the relics of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh. The Venerable Seraphim of Sarov and the Venerable Sergius both were under the special protection of God. They spent many years of prayerful solitude in the deep woods and they both equally embodied love, goodness and unity in Christ. This was reflected in the founding of monasteries dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity that signifies in itself the unity in love.

The Venerable Sergius of Radonezh reposed on September 25, 1392. Before his death, the hegumen asked the brethren to be buried in a cemetery for brethren of the monastery. However, Metropolitan Cyprian of Kiev blessed to bury him in the wooden Trinity Church. In 1408, this church was burned down when the monastery was invaded by the Golden Horde warrior Yedigei. Several years later, the holy relics were found at today’s location of the Trinity Cathedral. Not only the body of the saint, but also his clothes did not give in to decay, despite being submerged in subterranean waters. On July 5, 1422, in the presence of a large gathering of worshipers and clergy, the holy remains were lifted from the ground and temporarily placed in the wooden Trinity church. After the construction of a new stone Trinity Cathedral, the relics of Venerable Sergius were transferred there.

The feast day in the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery was marked by two Divine Liturgy services in the Transfiguration and Trinity Cathedrals and a general communion of the sisters.
