On March 21, the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery held the service of the Veneration of the Cross. This Sunday and the week that follows are called that of the Veneration of the Cross. After Great Doxology during Vigil, the host of clergy carried the Cross in a solemn procession to the middle of the church.

The chants heard today are dedicated to the Cross but they glorify its victory and joy instead of sufferings. The feast of Christ’s Resurrection is fast approaching and the mood in the services changes, too. We have reached the midpoint of Great Lent and the radiance of the Paschal light is getting brighter: “Today the heaven and earth rejoice, for the sign of Christ is revealed to mankind, the Thrice-Blessed Cross That was raised to issue the ever-lasting joy to those who venerate it. Come, let us sing and triumphantly rejoice over the destruction of hell, for Christ is risen from His tomb crushing death and saving all mankind!”

This year, forty martyrs of Sebaste are remembered on this Sunday as well.
