Metropolitan Nikolay (Kutepov) commemoration day

This day marks nineteen years since the repose of Metropolitan Nikolay (Kutepov) (1924–2001) of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas of blessed memory. He is remembered as a true shepherd of his flock who even during the most difficult years of his life continued to selflessly serve his Church and the country.

Archbishop Nikolay (Kutepov) arrived in the Nizhny Novgorod (known then as Gorky) Diocese in 1977. Before that, he served as a hierarch of the Vladimir Diocese for six years and knew some of the sisters from the old pre-revolutionary Diveyevo monastery who resided in Vladimir and Murom.

The historic events of the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery, be it the return of first buildings to the monastery, restoration and consecration of churches, or the patronal feasts, never went without the blessing and direct involvement of His Eminence Nikolay.

On Met. Nikolay’s memorial days, Hegumenia Sergiya, the abbess of the Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery, travels to Nizhny Novgorod to attend the memorial services traditionally held in the Spassky Old Fair Cathedral.  She came here today to pray at the remembrance litya service in the cathedral, His Eminence Nikolay’s final resting place.

Metropolitan Georgiy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas presided at the litya service. Bishop Elijah of Balakhna, Vicar of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese, Prot. Sergiy (Matveyev), the Secretary of the Diocesan Administration, Prot. Sergiy (Simagin), Dean of the Kanavinsky Deanery, and clergy of the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolitanate participated at the service. Among the attending clergy, quite a few began their ministry during the lifetime of His Eminence Nikolay of blessed memory.
